Burma, or Myanmar borders the region to the North and West. It is peopled by a diverse mix of six major groups of hilltribes, who retain their distinct customs, languages and beliefs. The Karen, who straddle the Thai - Burma border; the Hmong or Meo originating in Indochina; the Lahu, originally of Tibetan stock; the Lawa, who lived in this region long before the Thais arrived; the Lisu, who migrated in numbers from Southern China only in the 1930's; and the Yao, also recent arrivals, who came to Thailand from China by way of Burma and Laos. Villages are scattered right across the region, with some tribes occupying the fertile valley bottoms, others the less hospitable higher slopes. Mountain peaks rise from 1,500m to Thailand's highest point, Doi Intanon which is 2,565m or, 8,415ft. Tropical vegetation gives way to Fir trees and more temperate fruit and vegetable crops. The winter months regularly experience ground frosts.
